Artist
by Helen Mitchell

There is an artist whom I meet
When I go shopping down the street.
His stands will color are alight
To tempt the jaded appetite.
I marvel at his rare technique
In placing dates, fat, brown, and sleek
To catch the rays of sun
That set them glistening, everyone.
And every day new joy I glean
From his work in shaded green.
Cabbage, lettuce, onions, peas
Are trained in subtle harmonies.
The oranges with gold aglow,
Tomatoes brought from Mexico,
And yellow grapefruit in a pile
Near polished apples filled with guile.
The radish roses blush beneath
The celery in its green-white sheath.
And thus with color, line and light
An artist tempts the appetite!
